International Symposium on Dolphin Assisted Therapy

Melia Turquesa Hotel, Cancun, Mexico

September 8-10, 1995

Dedication

These Symposium Proceedings are dedicated to the memory of Dr. Steven Jozsef, 1954 - 1994.

Dr. Stephen Jozsef attended Mc Gill University in Montreal , Canada where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in neurobiology. At that time he did research in neurophysiology and neurochemistry. He received his M.D. from the University of Toronto. Post Graduate training included 2 1/2 years of psychiatry. His interest in alpha brainwave frequencies was nurtured at a behavioral medicine clinic where he worked in Santa Monica, California. There he worked with patients using alpha biofeedback equipment.

It was on his first visit to the dolphins that he recognized the parallel between his work with alpha biofeedback and dolphins. He and Macy Jozsef began Living from the Heart in 1988 as an alternative cancer therapy program.

After a career of helping hundreds of people suffering from a variety of disorders, Dr. Jozsef fell victim to cancer at the age of 40. His contribution to the field of dolphin assisted therapy was immense, inspiring many who are currently involved in this work. He was a wonderful, brilliant man, and his impact in dolphin assisted therapy is even yet being felt.

Welcome

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Cancun for the Inaugural International Symposium on Dolphin Assisted Therapy. We have worked diligently to provide this opportunity to share research, methodology, protocol, and facilitation of therapy in human-dolphin interaction. It is our great hope that a community will emerge from this initial meeting which will carry Dolphin Assisted Therapy into complete accreditation through the establishment of a Board of Directors, a peer-review journal, joint research initiatives, and common research and presentation protocols. We hope that you take the opportunity to communicate and share your ideas and experiences in this emerging field.

Your Hosts,

David M. Cole Donna Parker Brewer
